Six days at sea.....

Saturday night we said farewell to San Diego and began the rocking and rolling down to Ensenada. Whew… that first night nearly swept my legs out from under me! I’d forgotten what it was like to be on a ship. The good news is I won’t have to buy a single glass of wine on this whole voyage (at least while at sea), because I feel tipsy enough as it is, and haven’t even had a drink! The students, however, were another story. They are so enamored with the concept of international waters and finally being of legal age that they didn’t waste any time getting drunk in Mexico before boarding the ship. Which made for some pretty rowdy passengers at about 10AM, but a very quiet evening when we left Ensenada and they were all passed out!

All the students are assigned to a “sea” (basically the location in which a group of them live, along with their Resident Director – RD – me). I have the Mediterranean Sea which is made up of about 69 passengers. Most of them are great! But I really think it was just ‘cause they were so tired last night. Ask me in another week….. :)

The food on board is surprisingly quite good and way too plentiful…. And working out on a ship is seriously like working out drunk (not that I have attempted that). But I am busy all day long, with meetings, classes, office hours, activities, etc, so hopefully it will all balance out. I’m still excited to see the world, and can’t wait to get to Japan. We still have five more days til we get to Hawaii and another nine after that til we get to Kobe. That’s a lot of time on a ship! Seriously. But, once we get to Japan, we’ll be in and out of ports more quickly and spend less time on the ship. I really can’t wait to see land. The view of absolutely nothing but water is pretty cool, but being rocked to sleep every night is going to wear out its welcome soon.
I was planning to upload some photos but it looks like I am going to have to buy a new camera in Hawaii or Japan. Mine has decided not to function on possibly the most amazing photo taking opportunity of my life. But if there is one thing I have learned in the last week it’s to expect a lot of uncertainty and simply adapt. :) Besides, they make really good cameras in Japan, right?

By the way, Yas, the photographer is really cute.
